I am a G.Grandaughter of John Henry Brown and his wife Melvina (McCoy) Brown.

I am not sure from what paper this obit came. It was among the remains of my Grandmother's when she passed away in 1968. It is likely from the Wayne County Press or it may be from a paper I heard my Grandmother refer to as Wayne City News. I am not certain that is the correct tittle, only that she referred to it as such. The date is not on the clipping but the date of John  Henry Brown's death was March 7, 1929.

I know there are many relatives still living in the Wayne Co. area as well as the Jefferson Co. area of Il.Also included are an obit of Melvina McCoy Brown and an additional obit of a grandchild to both whose obit mentions that general area. Hope this is of interest to someone.

In Memoriam

John Henry Brown was born in Harden county, Kentucky, March 9, 1851, and departed this life March 7, 1929 at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 26 days.

At an early age his parents, Dawson M. and Sarah Hanner Brown, moved with him to Worrick County, Indiana, where, at the age of 23 years he was united in marriage to Melvina McCoy, and immediately united with the General Baptist church but later transferred his membership to Methodist Episcopal church, and remained a constant member until 8 years ago, when he moved to Bluford, Ill. He  then transferred his membership to the United Brethen church.

With his wife and large family of children he moved to Wayne county, Ill., in November, 1896.

He was indeed a most affectionate husband and father and was thoroughly acquainted with toil. Toil did not yield any great amount of this world's goods, but there is something of far more value, that he was always and justly very proud of, and that was his honor. He was often heard to remark "My honor is all I have in this world, and I never expect to part with that" This is a fine torch to light the pathway of those left behind who should profit by his fine example.

He leaves to mourn him as their loss, a wife, Mrs. Melvina Brown of Bluford, and nine children as follows: William D. Brown of Belle Rive, Ill., Mrs. Sarah E. Casey of Peoria, Ill., Mrs. Artella P. Stephens of Dale Ind.,  Mrs. Estella Moske of Boyero, Colo., Paris R. Brown of  Bluford, Ill., Mrs. Caroline Knowles of Bluford, Ill. Mrs.Matilda Luke of Rochelle, Ill., Walter G. Brown of Bluford, Ill. and Mrs. Lenora White of Bluford, Ill. and besides these a host of friends.

After being disabled with a failing heart for several  weeks, he passed away without much pain.

Rev. Mr. Osborn of the U.B. church conducted the funeral services Friday afternoon, March 8.
