Sept. 3, 1970

     A 21-year-old Fairfield mother, Norma Jean Thomas, and her son, Danny, age 5, are killed in a wreck on the blacktop west of Johnsonville.
     The Fairfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church plans to construct a new church sanctuary on 12 acres at the west edge of the city.
     Elder Dale Warren is elected new vice president of the Fairfield Ministerial Alliance. He succeeds Bro. Shelton Thomas, who is leaving Fairfield.
     Property owners along the I-64 right of way land purchases, are protesting prices offered by the state for their land.
     Clarence Eugene Wilson. Convicted here on murder of a police chief at Oblong, is sentenced to a 50 to 75 year term and 10 to 12 year term.
     Olney Central College cancels four planned adult education classes here.
     Democrats hold a supper at the Parker Building here.
     Fairfield High enrollment is up at 634, compared to 630 a year ago. Fairfield Grade enrollment is at 936, a drop of 49 from a year ago.
     A 16 county outdoor recreations survey shows Wayne County's potential is near the newest spot on the totem pole.
     Fairfield temperatures range from 67 to 90.
     Leon Bankston is named guidance counselor at Fairfield High. He has been on the faculty five years.
     The city of Fairfield's tax levy is up $16,000.
     Fred Smith is upped in rank to sergeant on the Fairfield police force.
     Louis Zurliene suffers a heart attack.
     Cisne residents are now drinking flouridated water.

     Jack T. Mathews has major surgery on his left hand at the Carle Clinic in Champaign.
     Another deep oil test is being drilled in Big Mound Township, the Jenkins, Brothers' Mrs. Bernard Podolsky No. 1.
     A movie depicting the 50 year history of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce is nearly completed.
     A prayer garden is being developed at Wayne City.
     The Wayne County board approves a $989,000 appropriation ordinance.
     A wig and style show is planned here as a part of the Fall Fun Fest.
     Fairfield temperatures range from 61 to 95.
     Eighteen from Wayne County are awarded SIU degrees.
     Steve Wingert, a former Fairfield boy, now of Dallas, Tex., heads a new firm called "Computer Games."
     The Mill Shoals team wins a fire dept. water fight competition at a Labor Day weekend celebration in Mill Shoals.
     Low bids for I-64 work in Wayne County go over the $8 million mark.
     The Bayless Shop, Fairfield's newest fashion shop, located at 117 East Main, is opening, owned by the Gene Bayless' of Carmi. Mrs. Everett Robbins will manage the store.
     William, 13-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Adams, of Mill Shoals, is ill with rabbit fever.
     The Fairfield Eagles Lodge celebrates its 22nd anniversary.
     New day care centers for Fairfield may be coming here according to the Wayne County Economic Opportunity Association.

     The Fairfield Greyhound bus depot now stopping at the Montgomery Ward Store, may be moved to Cy's Ice Cream Place on S.E. Fourth.
     Mrs. Donna Kay Jones is opening an accounting business here.
     Further school consolidation is being pushed in Illinois and committees are being named for a county level meeting on this state effort.
     Geff is set for its tenth annual Frontier Days celebration.
     The Fairfield Retail Merchants plan a Goblin Goodies Halloween promotion.
     The annual Wayne County ag outlook meeting will be held this week at the fairgrounds.
     Only 17 percent of county taxes have been paid.
     Fairfield temperatures range from 69 to 86.
     The Beta Eta ESA chapter is leading the effort for new downtown trash receptacles, in Fairfield.
     Fall Fun Fest buttons are on sale and there will be number drawings for prizes during the celebration.
     Mrs. Christy Beiswenger is a new resident at Way-Fair.
     Marriage license: Donald E. Grimes, Jr., and Cynthia D. Bevis.
     George Bradley, 81, of rural Cisne, dies.
     Donald Lee Jones, 45, Wayne City truck driver, dies at his home.
     Lowell A. Towns, 70, retired Cisne farmer, dies.

     John and Kelly Basnett have a new baby girl.
     Ron Weedon, of Fairfield, will serve as chairman for an IECC Business Help Center planned by the junior college district.
     Only two oil tests are drilling in Wayne County.
     The Food Park team wins first place in the Fairfield Men's Slo-Pitch softball tournament.
     Leon Colclasure is re-elected president of the Fairfield Mule Backers organization.
     Rev. Dick Sullins. president of the Fairfield Ministerial Alliance, will name his committee.
     Rick Clark is named manager of Consolidated Grain at Wayne City.
     Two new events for the Fall Fun Fest include a 10,000 meter run and a bicycle race (to Cisne and back).
     Shelly Vaughan, Susan Wilson and Lori Sullivan are named FCHS homecoming queen candidates.
     Fairfield Cable TV customers have a new channel, Channel 44 out of Evansville.
     The North Wayne Ambulance Service urgently needs more EMTs in their ranks.
     Henry Mathews undergoes abdominal surgery at an Evansville hospital.
     Willard (Bill) Heidinger, 65, dies at Memorial Hospital. He was a retired personnel official at Champion Lab and Airtex.
     Mrs Sarah P. LeMond, 85, retired restaurant operator, dies at Memorial Hospital.
     Mrs. Maxine Eaton, 76, who headed Public Aid here for years, dies.
     Mr. and Mrs. Homer Williasms, of Cisne, are wed 50 years.
