     The county tax assessors find 5,515 cars in Wayne County and nine head of cattle in Fairfield itself . . .  Three young Fairfield boys are caught tossing eggs at cars by state police, but get off with a stern lecture for their misdeeds . . .  Fairfield temperatures this week range from 47 to 80 . . .  Fairfield has no fire calls during Fire Prevention Week and a ribbon strung across the entrance stays up all seven days . . . Mrs.  Louetta Gehl, 79, Princeton, Ind., dies there.  She was the mother of Mrs. Walther Ketzner . . . An old-fashioned community church service is being planned for the Good Old Days celebration.
Rev. George Karr, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will be the speaker. Hubert Songer will be in charge of the music . . .  A state historymobile unit will be in Fairfield for the Good Old Days celebration, with an interesting exhibit on the Civil War . . .      Chamber committees have been named to select top directors, the industry and man-of-the-year recipients.
     Wayne County's 540 4-H'ers are observing National 4-H Week, and window display winners are the Pleasant Hour 4-H club, first; Geff Chatters, second, and the Huckleberry's, third.
     Lt. Col. Charles G. Robinson, 43, former Fairfield boy, died in an Air Force test plane near Ft. Worth. He was the son of Mrs. George L. Robinson of rural Fairfield. His father is deceased.
     Thirty dollars in prize money will be given by the Fairfield Lions Club for the best Halloween window paintings in store windows.
     Fairfield's two Baptist ministers have been named to posts in the Mt. Erie Baptist Association: Rev. L. D. Patrick, North Side, is the new second vice moderator and Evangelism chairman; Rev. David Dean, First Baptist, is new youth director. Rev. Joe Bob Pearce of the Wayne City Baptist Church is the treasurer.
     A 3 1/2-hour search of the Pond Creek area failed to produce a 19 Year-old Fairfield youth, Russell Harl, who is accused of deserting the Marine Corps.
     The City of Fairfield purchases 40 acres from the John Kays, fronting Airport Road and the Southern Railway tracks in southwest Fairfield. They'll pay $750 an acre, or a total of $30,000. The city recently paid $108,000 for 180 acres in the area of the Rt. 15 and 45 cloverleaf from the Carroll Brights and the Walter Sons heirs. It's all for industrial growth.
     The Lee Mar Oil Co., about three miles south of Fairfield, is drilling at 2,339 feet.
     The Fairfield Public Library adds a new service: a copy machine is now available and may be used for 10 cents a copy.
     The Lions sacked up 600 pounds of candy to conduct their house-to-house
     Lee Hicks, 63, Golden Gate, dies of cancer. He was a well-known painter and heating man, and served as Golden Gate's mayor for 12 years.
     Charles Newton, 45, dies of cancer at the VA Hospital in Marion.
     Phil Quindry, former Fairfield boy and son of Mr. and Mrs.  Lowell Quindry, passes the Illinois Bar Exam.
     Dan Marks, son of Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Marks, is one of 241 new students to attend the Culver Military Academy.
     Connie McGill weds Richard McGowan.
     Mr.  and Mrs. David Iles observe their golden wedding anniversary.
     Former Fairfield boy, Frank E. Blazey, is now a general in the Army.

Oct. 12, 1970

     Sen. Ralph Smith will speak at the Wayne City GOP rally.
     Four cars of a 35-car eastbound Southern freight train derailed about midnight Thursday on a track a mile west of Merriam. All of the cars were empty.
     The FCHS Homecoming is set for this Weekend. Queen candidates are Debbie McNeely, Kathy Randolph and Carol Ann Young.

     One hundred-forty reservations are now in for the FCHS Old Timers dinner.
     A near $9,000 grant to the Fairfield and Wayne County law enforcement units was announced over the weekend by the Illinois Law Enforcement Commission.  Included will be funds for a new base radio station for the county, new mobile radio unit for the city, three walkie-talkies and five mobile radio scanners for the city.   A 19 year-old Wayne City girl, Jackie Peyton, is in good condition at Fairfield Memorial Hospital following a car wreck.

   If voters approve, Wayne County will be eligible for up to $503,240 in state and federal funds to complete four sewage treatment projects this decade.
     There are 12,527 people registered to vote Nov. 3 in Wayne County
     The Fairfield Mules lost to Salem on the gridiron, 26-0. Runningback Robert Vaughan has a hairline fracture in his shoulder.
    The Cisne cross country team beats Noble; Johnie Baker's time of 7:19 is just nine seconds shy of the MTC record set  by Clay City's Dave Hunley.
     Bean Days draws its biggest crowd ever at Wayne City-5,000 to 7,500.

     The Wayne County Board postpones any decision on possible jail renovations due to controversy about what should be done. It would cost $700,000 to build a new 12-cell attachment and renovate the old jail house.
     Wayne County voters will be asked Nov. 5 to decide on a tax hike that will raise the county highway and bridge tax rate by 25 percent. It would increase taxes by a few cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
     Airtex official Jim Douglass. 56, Fairfield, died at an Evansville hospital following a bout with cancer. He was National Accounts Sales Manager, head of Airtex's original equipment manufacturers and private label accounts.
     Flo Porter, 73, Cisne, dies following an apparent heart attack.
     Mr. and Mrs. Euil Ferguson observe their 50th wedding anniversary.
     Nettie Haynes observes her 100th birthday.
     The EIU women's softball team stops by teammate Sara Karcher's home in Wayne City on their way back to school, following a twinbill at SIU.
     While the Fairfield Mules have fallen to 2-4, linebacker Matt Kinney leads the NEC in tackles with 86; Earl Steury has 68 and is second in the league.

   Assessed valuation of farm land will probably continue to decline over the next five years, says County Supervisor of Assessments Burt Bates. It will cost the county about $30 million in its tax base-about a quarter of the current tax
     Assessed valuation of the property in District #225 has dropped by almost a half million dollars this year, meaning the FCHS district will lose money in most funds-including around $100,000 in the education fund alone.
     The FCHS board went on record Thursday to support consolidation.
     The Fairfield Park District has authorized clearing operations to start on land just east of Lakeside Tennis Courts for two new tennis courts.
     Fairfield Lions collected $1,418 in their one-day candy sale Friday. That's about double of what was collected last year.
     Retired Cisne trucker Harry Walker, 67, dies of cancer.
     Retired Keenes farmer Charles Bradford, 86, dies of cancer.
     Mr. and Mrs. Glen Loyd and Mr. and Mrs. Ken Alldredge observe their golden anniversaries.
     The Mules lose 34-18 to Carmi, but quarterback Joe Falcomata; completes 23  of 52 passes for 304 yards. Marc Murphy snags 10 catches for 171 yards.
     Red Neckerson will speak at Oil Industry Night.
     The Fairfield Rotary Club observes its 60th birthday. Longtime club members are honored: T.O. Mathews, George Freshwater, Emmitt Hoffee, Raymond George and Arthur McGehee.
