JOHN DEEM
John Deem, 71, was born in Fayette county, Pa., Nay 18, 1816.
Was left motherless at the age of 7 years and was raised on a farm. Received
18 months schooling by the time he was 18 years old, but during most of
that period he was the close companion of a graduate from Cannonsburg College,
Washingtcn county, Pa. The remainder of his education he dug out at his
own expense— never had the advantage of a free school. Moved to Harrison
county, Ohio, in 1836. In 1837 commenced teaching school. Since that time
he has spent 11 :.ars and 10 months teaching. In 1854 emigrated from Ohio
to Wayne county, Ill. Mr. Deem has raised a large family, made lots of
money and saved but little. Politically he is a conservative Democrat.
Is a member of the N.E. church, a strong advocate of temperance, and is
blest with good health and is still icing some surveying. He is one of
the few now living who had the honor of seeing the great Marques DeLafayette
in 1824.
