JOHN HENSON

A letter replying to a request for military history on John Henson.
John applied at age 62 on September 9,1829 while a resident of Vanderburgh
County, Indiana. States they raised a family of children, but Reuben
is only name that has been found mentioned. At bottom of page is
hand written "had a brother John".
State of Indiana-Vanderburgh Co. Sept. term 1829
On September 9, 1829 John Henson a resident of said county above states
he is about 62, exact age unknown lists his property as:
1 horse worth about 30.00
2 cows 3 calves 4 yearling heifers worth about 15.00
hogs worth about 7.00
household stuff not over 30.00
drawing chain worth about 4.00
2 plows worth about 6.00
In all worth about 88.00 said I rent about 6 acres
State of Kentucky-Calloway Co. On March 25, 1833 Jesse Henson eldest brother of John Henson states at commencement of Revolutionary War, they lived with Father on frontier of Virginia on waters of Holson River. He states he and brother entered service he thinks about October 1778. After returning home John and the Father moved to North Carolina and Jesse returned to service, and John later joined again also. Jesse later saw John again while he was visiting a relative. John upon hearing he was there stopped by wearing his uniform and telling his brother all about being back in service.
State of Illinois-Wayne Co.
On August 30, 1833 John Henson aged 67, was sworn in and states
he resided in Virginia near Holson River, and entered the service in October,
1778. He was discharged after about 2 months.
He removed to North Carolina and enlisted 1st of May 1781 in Regiment
of Dragoons. At this time he lived in Rutherford Co. North Carolina. H
was discharged 1st. of March, 1782. He states Jesse Henson can testify
to his 10 months of service. He states he was born somewhere in Virginia
or North Carolina. Not sure where. After War resided in Rutherford
Co. North Carolina 7-8 years, then removed to Kentucky for 18 years. Removed
to Indiana 17-18 years then to Wayne Co. Illinois.

Sir:
Letter contains additional proof for claim of Act of July 7, 1838 which
was forwarded to you June last. You told me the claim was not admitted
under Attorney General, but having observed a bill that passed lower house
since ammending, wherefore hope the Attorney General will comply to admit.
I Bartlett Henson of County of Marshall and state of Kentucky swears
he was personally acquainted with John Henson deceased of state of Illinois,
and his widow Jane, and Jesse Henson brother of John, who Jesse is my neighbor,
and wives of the two men are sisters.

State of Illinois-Wayne Co.
On May 18, 1842 Jane Henson aged 71 years, appeared to file
for pension. States she married John Henson in Spring of 1787. Said
he died July 25, 1835, and she has been a widow ever since.
J.P. John Brown stated due to her health and age he went to her home for her statement.
Reuben Henson son of John and Jane Henson stated his Father died July 25,1835 and his Mother has been a widow since that time.
State of Illinois-Wayne Co.
On September 20, 1842 Phillip Henson states he is not certain,
but believes himself to be near 55 years but not less than 53.
Recollects when he was 4 years old his sister was born.Can recollect things
for last 48 years, and as long as he can remember his aunt & uncle
were man and wife, and had 3 kids by 1794.

On September 21, 1842 Jane Henson appeared to make the following
ammended declaration to obtain benefit of Act of Congress passed July 7,
1838 and the joint Resolution of the 16th August, 1842. States there is
no record of her marriage or her childrens birth.
Widow inscribed on Roll at rate of 43.33 to commence March 4, 1843.

On April 13, 1843 Jane Henson aged 77stated she is widow of John Henson

On October 27, 1848 Jane Henson aged 84 years appeared to obtain
benefits of Act of Congress of February 2, 1848. States she received the
pension of Act of Congress June 17, 1844. Rate of 43.33 per annum.

State of Illinois-Wayne Co.
On September 1, 1855 Jane Henson aged 90 years, appeared, and
stated she married John Henson by J.P. George Ledbetter. Her name before
marriage was Jane Goodbread.
