Abe Land disability Pension Information (from the government):
Per his application on May 13, 1881, his age was 36, lived near Carmi, IL, White Co.—sworn to before a notary public:
States—for five years immediately preceding my enlistment into the service of the US on November 1862, I lived in the town of Poseyville in the county of Posey (IN) all the time, working on a farm. Since my discharge on Jul 11, 1865, I have resided in Gibson County, IN, from 1865 to 1867; from 1867 to 1871 in Cowley Co., KS; from 1871 to 1872 in Lyon Co., KA; from 1872-1875 in White Co., IL (Carmi); from 1875-1880 in Cowley Co., KS; and from 1881 to the present time in Carmi, White Co., IL.
States he was a farmer and merchant. Claims the disability for which I claim a pension arises from an injury to the spine at camp Thibadeaux, LA in Oct 1864. States—“I ‘d been detailed with a number of others at hauling wood for the camp and while at work a large log fell upon my back causing injury to my spine and totally disabling me from military duty and not able to reach camp without assistance, but had to be hauled back in a wagon. After I reached camp I was sent to the following hospitals-- In March I was transferred to Marion Hospital, New Orleans; in April to Willets Point, NY Harbor; in June 1865 to Davids’ Isle, NY Harbor in all of which places I was treated for spine injury. I never performed any military service after the accident.”
Then he states what medical treatment was given and the doctors who did it after his discharge
His physical features were—5 ft 10/11 inches, light complexion, blue or hazel eyes, dark hair (gray in latter years), he was a farmer; weight 130-164—depending on the date of the application; born Mar 26, 1845 at Cynthiana, IN (Posey CO). On other applications he stated he was b. in Gibson Co (which is correct—Cynthiana was the nearest town). He and his family lived in White CO after their return from KS in 1881 and from 1907 they moved to Wayne Co (near Fairfield, IL).
************************
When Abe was discharged, he received a disability pay of $4.00 per
month until
Sept 20, 1882, then he had to reapply and reapply every so often for
any increases. He had to state what happened, where he
lived, etc, have testimonies from others vouching he was disabled (and
have it notarized), and doctor’s statements. Sometimes
the increase was denied, other times not. He began receiving
$8.00 per month, it was increased to $10.00, then $18.00, then $24.00,
etc. When he died he was receiving $100.00 a month.
