Caleb C. Jones was the son of Bathus C. Jones and Nancy Clark. He was born about 1841 in Wayne County, IL. He died December 25, 1897 in Anna, Union County, IL. Burial location is unknown.
Caleb C. Jones' Civil War Pension papers:
1) Caleb C. Jones applied for and "Invalid Army Pension" in
Wayne County, Illinois, on April 26, 1890. This document shows:
A) He was 50 years old and a resident of Fairfield.
B) He had enlisted in the Army at Fairfield on May 2,
1862 as a private in Company G of the 62nd regiment of Illinois volunteers
commanded by Jas. L. Garetson.
C) He was 5 feet 11 inches tall, had a light complexion,
dark hair, blue eyes.
D) He was honorably discharged at Springfield, Illinois,
on May 2, 1865.
E) In May 1862 he contracted the mumps from contagion.
The mumps resulted in disease of the back. This happened at Paducah,
KY
F) Also at Columbus, KY about June 1862 he contracted
chills and fever and that resulted in malarial poisoning and disease of
the liver. This came from impure water, improper food and malaira.
G) Also about December 1862 he contracted a severe cold
caused by exposure to rain and snow. at Holly Springs, Mississippi.
This resulted in a disease of the lungs.
H) He resided in Wayne County Illinois since discarded
and was a farmer. He is now physically disabled by reason of his
injuries listed above.
I) There is no signature OR mark on this document,
but is witnessed by 2 individuals named J. Shaeffer and J. C. Trousdale
2) There is a document dropping him from the pension rolls because of his death Dec. 25, 1987. This was filed Dec. 31, 1897. Also stated that he was last paid $6 to Oct. 4, 1897.
3) There is a "Declaration for widow's pension" filed in Wayne
County Jan 13, 1898 for Caroline A. Jones.
A) This one includes Caleb's service entry & exit,
his date of death & the location of Anna, IL.
B) It lists that Caroline A. Knowles married Caleb March
4, 1867 by Richard Massey, but that no document existed because of the
courthouse burning in Nov 1886. Also that Massey had moved from the
county years ago and his address was not known.
C) Also that neither Caleb or Caroline had been previously
married and that Caroline had not remarried.
D) No surviving children under 16 years of age.
E) That Mamie (???) Jones, born November 19, 1879 and
is permanently afflicted with spinal disease. This must be the Mary
A. listed on the 1880 census.
F) This document has Caroline's signature and is witnessed
again by J. Shaeffer plus a J. E. Golden.
4) An additional document by Caroline, Jan 31, 1898, with some
of the same information.
A) Shows her as 57 and residing in Fairfield.
B) Has a certificate of Caleb's death from Samuel Dodds,
MD. that states Caleb died in the Insane Asylum at Anna, Illinois.
C) That she has a ???? and homestead interest in a small
dwelling house and she thinks 2 & ½ lots in Fairfield, Illinois
worth about $75. Also, has kitchen and household furniture worth
about $25. No other property either real or personal. No income.
D) Again signed Caroline A. Jones. Note the one
obit I mentioned of Caroline's sometime ago had her middle initial as E.??
Obviously that was wrong.
5) A drop order due to Caroline's death.
6) An "Application for reimbursement" from Nettie Carpenter,
age 44, filed Aug. 31, 1912., a resident of Fairfield. Actually they
lived on a farm just west of Fairfield.
A) Some repeat information.
B) Caroline's death Aug 16, 1912. Also includes
a statement from Caroline's attending physician, J. D. Harlan.
C) Cause of death - Cancer of the right breast.
Constant care for the last 2 years. Sickness began 1902.
D) Caroline died at Nettie's house and is buried in
Koontz cemetery, south of Fairfield.
E) Paid Dr. Harlan $160 and the undertaker, F. C. McMackin
$56.

7) Evidently the pensions department had sent a letter in Sept about the property Caroline had claimed on her pension request. This document was a reply that Caroline's property had been sold before Caroline's death to cover for her care. It listed: Fairfield lots 121 ($30), 122 ($30), 119 ($100) and 120 traded for other property and then disposed of.
8) A "War Department record and pension division" page with some of Caleb's military records. Much of same info, but does show him taken prisoner at Holly Springs on Dec 20, 1862. Evidently released from there and reported to Benton Bks (Barracks??), MO Jan 7, 1863. Also shows a number of bouts with Int. fever for the rest of his service time.
