1862 CENSUS MILITIA ROLL MIGRATION REPORT |
NOTES:
The 1862 List was transmitted to Springfield under the following certification:
State of Illinois Wayne County
I, J. W. Barnhill, Clerk of the County Court, in and for said County, do hereby certify that the within is a correct copy of the Militia Rolls of each Township of said County as returned to this office by the Assessors of said County excepting Ziff Town.
Given under my hand and Official seal at Fairfield this Ninth day of August A. D. 1862
J. W. Barnhill, Clerk
P. S. The list from Ziff Town has been unavoidably delayed – but will be sent – in a few days – perhaps next mail.
Barnhill, Clerk
C. I. Ridgeway – Fairfield. Report by Marshall ‘Mudd’ Jackson Military Dist Tenn.
(Ed. Note: The Zif listing was in the microfilm, but some of the names
were torn off.)
The second transmittal, a year later, says:
State of Illinois, Wayne County )
I, J. W. Barnhill, Clerk of the County Court in and for said County do hereby certify that this foregoing is a correct copy of the Militia roles of each township in said County as returned to my office by the assessors of said County.
Witness my hand and the seal of said Court affixed at Fairfield this 21st day of July AD 1863.
J. W. Barnhill, Clk
Ed. Note: Names were transcribed as read, with no intentional corrections made. Transcription difficulties continued and included the usual things, such as not being able to tell "Hale" from "Hall", "Mayo" from "Mays", uncrossed t’s from l’s, David from Daniel, etc.
The listings of these Reserve men only gave Township and men’s names.
Reservist numbers have been added in case anyone wants to verify the spellings
on the microfilms. It might also give a clue whether two men might
have lived in the same household merely based on sequential numbers.
Each 1862 township’s listing had a total at the bottom but the count did not always equal that total number which means some pages were not microfilmed. Some differences that we could expect between the two years in this listing could be caused by some of the men being in the service now, the 45 year olds were no longer included, the 17 year olds were added to the list, men became disabled at home and families moved away from or into Wayne County. The 1863 list did not have totals so we don’t know if there are missing pages there. These are the number of men still at home included in these Militia Lists:
