Submitted by Dianna Williams and volunteers: Harry Bryan, Linda Humphrey and Lois Branch
In October, 2004, Jeannie and I went to the EIU to see what they had that could be used on this site. When they told me 'Marriage Certificates from 1858-1886', I jumped with joy. Jeannie worked the microfilm and I got the paper off the printer.
Later I asked how EIU had these marriage certificates and the Wayne County Clerk (Office or any where in the court house) had them. Their replied shocked me, as the man said,
"They were sent here about 10 years ago to be microfilmed. After we were done, we asked the county clerk at that time what to do with the marriage certificates and we were told to 'throw them away'. So we threw them away."
I did some 'nosing around' and found that after the court house fire in 1886, the County Clerk tried to make mends to replace the burned certificates and asked 'couples' to help.
These certificates are indexed in Book A, County Clerk Offices but there are no certificates.
MANY THANKS to Jeanne for being with me to share the thrill of the findings. Harry, Linda, and Lois for the hours of scanning, transcribing, and for assisting me to complete this project.
Thanks to you, the researchers, for giving me the joy to find data to help you with your research.
Enjoy!
Dianna Williams
