J.R. CHANDLER, merchant, Wayne City, was born February 6, 1854, in Clay County, IL, where he received such an education as his part of the county afforded, and here he was early in life imbued with a spirit for a merchantile career fo rwhich he is so well fitted, and in which his many friends predict for him even greater succeses than he has thus far achieved. He commenced by clerking for his uncle, W.W. Brownfield, of Xenia, acting as traveling salesman six years.

In January, 1881, he came to Wayne City, IL, where he opened a dry goods store, carrying also groceries, boots, shoes and cloting, and at present enjoys a very large tradae, owing, his success no doubt, to this energy, and honesty in dealing with his customers.

Mr. Chandler was married, March 7, 1878, in Xenia, IL, to Miss Mollie Thing, born August 1, 1856, in Indiana, daughter of George and American (Rusher) Thing. He was a native of Pennsylvania, and she of Indiana.

Three children, now living, blessed this happy union, viz.: Maudie, born January 4, 1879; George, December 9, 1880; and an infant son, October 16, 1883.

Mr. Chandler is an I.O.O.F., Wayne City Lodge, No. 228. He is a member of the Town Board and in politics is a Republican. Mrs. Chandler is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The parents of our subject were Reuben and Elizabeth (Brownfield) Chandler. He was a farmer by occupation, and died in Iuka, IL. She, the mother of our subject, is yet living in Xenia, IL. She is daughter of William and C.W. (Cheeley) Brownfield, and is the mother of four children now living, viz.: William W., Catharine Brownfield, Mary Jacobson, John R., and George M. Allen; the latter was a child from her third husband, James Allen.
