Josephine (Iddings) Sampson

Josephine was born 18 Feb 1840 in Columbiana Co., OH, and died 11 Jan 1916 in Lincoln, Logan Co, IL of Pneumonia. She was the daughter of William IDDINGS and Martha Jane MITCHELL. She is buried in the Old Union Cemetery, Lincoln, Logan Co., IL. The grave is unmarked and located directly behind the cemetery maintenance shed.

Her siblings were: Arminda; Lewis; Margaretta; Malissa [MERCER]; John; Samuel; Elihu; Sarah Adaline [PARRHAM]; Louisa; Thomas Jefferson; Eliza Jane [ELLISON].

On 16 Dec 1869 she married Victor N. SAMPSON in Logan Co, IL. He was born around 1818, possibly in Maysville, Mason Co, KY.  It is unknown when he died but it is believed to be between 1880-1900 as he was shown on the 1880 IL Census, but Josephine is shown being a widow in 1900. He was the son of Francis Freeland SAMPSON and Matilda BAXTER; grandson of Jacob SAMPSON and Martha FREELAND; and Francis FREELAND and Mary KINGSBURY. His siblings were: Martha Ann; Robina; Francis W.; Jacob F.; Caroline Matilda; Junius Mortimore; John Augustus and Angeline; Orestes Mortimore.

To this union were born the following children:

  1. William P. SAMPSON, b. Oct 1870
  2. Charles Thomas SAMPSON, b. 20 Jul 1873; d. 08 Nov 1931
    He married Bessie OVERALL.
  3. Carrie Myrtle SAMPSON, b. 1879; d. 1883.

Victor was previously married to Mary E. DUNHAM on 27 Aug 1837 in McLean Co., IL. She was born 15 Aug 1819 in OH, and died 02 Jun 1868 in Waynesville, Dewitt Co., IL and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Waynesville, DeWitt Co., IL.

To this Union was born the following children:

  1. Eoline Grace SAMPSON. She married John HALE, 09 Feb 1877
  2. William SAMPSON, b. 12 Nov 1841; d. 14 Mar 1842
  3. Orestes S. SAMPSON, b. 1842
  4. Tench Tilghman SAMPSON, b. 1844. He married Catherine N. NICHOLS, 22 Dec 1865.
  5. Mary Martha P. SAMPSON, b. 1849.
  6. Victor Neff SAMPSON, b. 13 Oct 1851; d. 22 Apr 1853.

1880 IL Census, Fairfield Village [Barnhill Twp], Wayne Co., IL shows:
Victor N. Sampson, 62, "Cumberland Presbyterian Minister" as his trade/profession.  Living with him are: Josephine, 40, wife; William P., 10, son; Charles T., 7, son; and Carrie M., 1, daughter.

1900 IL Census, Grover Twp, Fairfield City, Wayne Co., IL: Josephine SAMPSON, Feb 1840, 60, widowed. Living with her are William, Oct 1871, 28, son/single; Charles, July 1875, 24, son/married; Bessie, 1883,16, daughter-in-law; and Roy, Feb 1900, 4 months, grandson.
