Laurie wrote, this is a copy of what is written in the 1884 Wayne Co., IL History book.
John R and Polly (Myers) second son, DANIEL SMITH and an uncle of Eliza Jane (COLLINS) BARR, was born on April 12, 1844.
He enlisted in the Civil War on August 13, 1862 for three years and was wounded in the battle of Lookout Mountain. Dan was very short, small man who weighed only seventy-six pounds at the time he enlisted in the Union Army. His favorite song was "Marching Through Georgia." In later years he would ask a niece to play the song on a pump organ, and he would march around and around the room as she played.
