Thomas A. Martin

1884 Biographical Sketches of City of Fairfield

THOMAS A. MARTIN, merchant, Fairfield.  The gentleman whose name heads this sketch was born in this county on February 19, 1841, and is a son of James D. and Jane (White) Martin.

The grandfather of our subject came to this county from Virginia in 1816, and died here in an early day.

The father was born has in 1818, and was married in 1840. He followed farming for a number of years, but was finally stricken blind and remained so until his death, which occurred in the spring of 1872, at Clay City.

The mother of our subject was born in Kentucky on August 3, 1816, and died in Clay County in, 1868.

Our subject remained in this county with his parents until 1861, and here he received his education. In that year, he went to Clay County with his parents, and resided there a number of years, but subsequently returned to Wayne County. He has been associated in business for a number of years with Mr. Sumners in both the grocery business and also in the pork packing establishment.

Mr. Martin was married in Clay City, in 1864, to Anna Golliher, a daughter of Henry Golliher, of Lamard Township. She was a native of Ohio, being born there in 18--, and to her were born two children-

  1. America wife of A. H. Wood, of Nebraska
  2. Edwin A

This lady died in this county in 1870.

In 1871, our subject was married to Nancy McCollum, who was born in this county in 1853 and is a daughter of Samuel McCollum. The result of this union has been four children, three of whom are now living, viz.,

  1. Henry T.
  2. Grace
  3. Frank C.
  4. Mary is the name of the deceased one.

Our subject is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and also of Clay City Lodge, No. 488, A., F. & A. M.
