VETERAN ANSWERS FINAL CALL

Courtland D. Slow, Well Known War Veteran Passed to the World Beyond

Courtland D Slow, one of the oldest and best known citizens of Northern Wayne County, finished his earthly career on Thursday of last week when he peacefully departed for the other world.

Mr. Slow was a leading citizen of his community and had the love and respect of all who knew him. He had been in poor health for some time and death came only to relieve a good man of his suffering.

The following obituary was read at the funeral services:

Courtland D Slow, son of James and Phoeba Slow, was born on a farm in Posey County, Ind., Sept. 8th 1830 and was reared to manhood there.

On Nov. 1st 1861 he enlisted at Wadesville, Indiana, as 1st Sergeant of Co. C60th Regiment Indiana Volunteers. He was successfully commissioned ad 2nd the 1st Lieutenant then captain of his company and served till September 23, 1863, when he came to Illinois and on March 10th 1865 he re-enlisted in C., G 18th Reg Illinois Infantry and was honorably discharged Dec 16, 1865.

Returning to Flora, Ill., he was united in marriage to Lydia E. Miller. 9 children were the fruit of this union there being three sons and six daughters two sons and two daughters died in infancy. Alice V. Farnsworth, of Pullman, WA, Ada Foote, of Cranbrook, Canada, Minnie F Macauley, of Bartlett, Oregon, Courtland D Slow, of Pullman, Washington, and Nellie Slow of Zif, Illinois, are among the living.

The last days of their father's life were filled with pain and suffering and he talked freely of his desire to depart from these scenes of earthly conflict and tribulation. On September 16, his petition was answered and his pain racked body at rest.

Eighty-five years and eight days numbered the period of his earthy pilgrimage. His faithful widow and children, twenty grandchildren and many relatives and friends lament the parting and await the day when each shall receive his portion for the king on the other shore.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.A. Battenfield at the home at 3 p.m. September 17th and the remains were interred in the Zif cemetery beside the little ones of the family who had gone on before.
