Call Comes to Mrs. Melinda Crews
Well-Known Jasper Townnship Woman
Passes to Great Unknown
Mrs. Melinda Crews, one of the best known, and highly respected women of Jasper township, passed away last Friday after suffering for many months from cancer of the stomach.
Melinda Martin was born Nov 10, 1835, and died June 11, 1909, aged 73 years and 7 months.
She was married to James White in 1852. To this union five children were born-two sons and three daughters- two of whom, Ellen and Wilmoth have preceded her to the glory world.
James, her husband, responded to his country's call and enlisted as a soldier in the war of the Rebellion. He was one of those lost on the fated ship, Gen. Lyons, which went down with all on board.
In the year 1869 she was joined in marriage to William Crews, to whom were born three children, one son and two daughters, one of whom, Alice, has gone before.
She leaves three sons and two daughters, with a host of relatives and friends, to mourn their loss. ...
She passed away peacefully, wholly resigned to the will of Him who giveth and who taketh away. "Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord."
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Borah at Ebenezer church
at three o'clock Sunday afternoon and the interment was in the cemetary
near by.
