John L. Wagner
was born in Dauphin county, Penn., September 16th, 1832; departed this life at his home in Leech township, May 19th 1917, aged 84 years, 8 months and 3 days, after a protracted illness of several months.
He leaves an aged wife, three sons and two daughters (one son and one daughter having preceded him in death), twenty-five grandchildren and one sister, besides a circle of frinds as wide as his acquaintance.
Mr. Wagner came to our locality from his birth place in the spring of 1864. He returned to his native land the following winter, where he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Berst, January 5th, 1865. His home being established in Wayne county, he now came with his bride prepared to become a permanent resident.
Mr. and Mrs. Wagner were members of the Evangelical Luthern church in their northern home. Since coming here their family has cast its lot with the Cumberland Presbyterians at Union.
Mr. Wagner wa a good man; a devoted husband and father; an obliging neighbor and a friend to everybody in the time of need. A man of whom we believe never wronged a fellow being intentionally. By his abiding faith in the priciples of right and justice, the elements of which true Christianity is composed, we belive he is now reaping of that golden harvest where the weary are at rest.
Funeral services were held at Union church on Monday, May 21st conducted by Rev. J. W. Borah and were well attended, assuring the bereaved family of the sympathy of a wide circle of friends.
