was born near Harrisburg, Penn., November 30th, 1843; departing this life November 13th, 1913, at the home of  J.  L.  Wagner in Leech township, Wayne county,  lllinois, aged 69 years. 11 months, and 13 days.

Deceased came to Illinois to visit relatives last September and was making his home temporarily with his sister, Mrs. Wagner.  He was afflicted with  asthma  and dropsy from which he had long suffered.

The end came suddenly and unexpectedly while sitting in his chair by the fireside.

Funeral services were held at Union church on Sunday, under the auspices of the Knights of Pythias, devotional services being led by Bro. J. M. Day of Fairfield. The remains were shipped to Toledo, Ohio, Monday for burial beside his wife who preceded him in death, three years ago

Mr. Berst was a veteran of the civil war; he leaves four aged brothers, John and Joseph Berst, of Fairfield, William Berst, of Joliet. Ill.; and Peter Berst, of Harrisburg, Pa; one sister Mrs. J. L. Wagner and a half sister, Mrs. Cathrine Blouch, of Toledo, Ohio and  numerous relatives.
