Ruby Jennings, daughter of Davis and Lucinda Hilliard, was born in Wayne County near Geff, Sept. 22, 1897, where she grew to womanhood. Sept. 18, 1913, she was united in marriage to Earl Ellis of Johnsonville. To this union were born three sons, namely, Raymond, Roy and Ogie.
On October 6, 1917, Mr. Ellis was overtaken by death. On Dec. 30th, 2929, she was united in marriage to Omer Gaines of Orchardville. To this union were born three children, one daughter and two sons, Modena, John and Ivan.
Soon after this union Omer and Ruby moved into Garden Hill township where they have lived during their married life.
For the past four years her health had been failing and since the first of this last July, her suffering had been most severe. She bore it patiently, greeting those who called to see her with pleasant smiles. After all the medical aid and loving carte had been given, on Saturday afternoon at 4:00, Sept. 22, 1945, she passed away, age 48 years and 20 days.
In early life she professed faith in Christ and united with the General Baptist church, Rock Branch. She has also stated during her sickness that she was ready for this occasion.
She leaves to mourn her departures, a loving husband, six children, Miss Modena Gaines of Norfolk, Va.; Pfc. John Gaines of the armed forces, who is home on furlough from the European theatre of war; Pearl Ivan Gaines at home; Roy Ellis of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; Raymond Ellis of Wayne City and Ensign Ogie Ellis of the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific; two grandsons, Jerry and Gary of Mt. Vernon.
Brothers and sisters surviving include; four brothers, Ralph of Scottsboro, Ala.; Roy, of Geff; Floyd of Millington, Hershel, of Akron, Ohio. Three sisters, Mrs. Grace Beeson, and Mrs. Bessie Richardson of Geff, Mrs. Beulah Simpson of Rutland, Ill. and a very dear mother-in-law, with a host of other relatives and friends.
Ruby was a kind, loving and devoted companion and mother, a good friend and neighbor. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Fears and joy today are blended.
Fears for loss and joy for gain,
Mother’s stay on earth is ended,
God has called her from her pain.
Vain the tribute we would tender.
Words of ours can never express, Nor the flowers that loved ones
sent her, All she was of loveliness.
Proud are we that God had loaned her,
Though it seems so short a while,
Proud to think that we have owned her,
And have seen her blessed smile.
Anywhere we ever found her,
Seemed like something from above,
Spreading sunshine all around her,
Blending happiness and love.
Thanks to God w_______us;
As we lay her ‘neath ______
Such a gift was never _____
As that mother dear _______
Card of Thanks
We wish to express our sincere thanks and appreciation to our friends
and neighbors for their acts of kindness and words of sympathy during the
illness and at the death of our beloved wife and mother.
