Funeral services were conducted last Thursday at 2:00 p.m. from the Cisne Christian church for Mrs. Alice Ann Carpenter, who died last Tuesday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.L. Towns, near Cisne.
Mrs. Carpenter’s pastor, Eld. S. Marvin Phillips, of Fairfield, officiated and burial was in the Pleasant Grove cemetery.
Alice Ann, only daughter of John and Sarah Ross, was born near Carmi on September 15, 1864. Being left an orphan at the age of eight years, she was reared in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Hawk, of near Geff.
She was united in marriage to Coultas Carpenter on January 14, 1883. Six children were born to this union.
Soon after their marriage they united with the Pleasant Grove Christian church, where she was a faithful member for many years. Several years ago she placed her membership with the Church of Christ of Fairfield, where she remained a loyal member.
To know her was to love her and many will long remember the many kind deeds as one of her greatest pleasures was in being of service to others.
She passed away at the home of her daughter, where she had been tenderly cared for during her illness of eight months duration at the age of 85 years, one month and 10 days.
She was preceded in death by one son, Henry, who passed away in infancy; her husband, on February 4, 1926, and a grandson, Robert Flick, who gave his life in the service of his country.
She leaves three daughters, Mrs. L.L. Rider of Redlands, Calif., Mrs. Towns, of Cisne and Mrs. G.A. Flick of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sons, Chas. Carpenter and William Carpenter, both of Cisne; ten grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
