Cora L. Martin, daughter of Eleazer and Lucretia Watkins-Martin was born near Fairfield, IL February 16, 1878 and passed into the fuller life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Marie Williams of Dexter. Her age was 75 years, 6 months, and 18 days.
She was one of 12 children, 8 of them preceeding her in death. She grew to womanhood in the community of her birth, and there married George W. Smith in 1898. Soon afterward she was (?) into Christ at Fairfield, where her membership has been kept since.
She and the husband and Marie came to the Dexter community more than 50 years ago where the husband engaged in business.
Beside the first mentioned daughter, another girl was born to Mr. And Mrs. Smith. Her name is Reva Lee.
Mrs. Smith leaves to mourn her passing two daughters, Mrs. Williams and Mrs. Reva Lee Cox both of Dexter, 2 sisters, Mrs. Emma Winkles of Flint, Mich, and Mrs. Grant Woods of Lawrenceville, IL, one brother John Martin of Dexter, a granddaughter Judy Cox of Dexter, 10 nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
Mrs. Smith was a home lover, and she did not get far from her home and loved ones. Her health began to fail about 5 years ago and she quietly fell asleep finding release from suffering and anxiety. In full assurance of faith she could say with one who has gone before:
“Sheaves after sowing, sun after rain.
Sight after mystery, peace after pain.
Joy after sorrow, calm after blast
Rest after weariness
Sweet rest at last.”
Service of comfort was held at the Christian Church Sunday afternoon September 6. Walter A. Smith Officiating.
