March 23, 1899:
Death of James E. Lane
The death of James Ed. Lane, which was announced Wednesday forenoon about ten o'clock, startled the community. Mr. Lane had been sick only about a week, and few knew of his illness, but his physicians had considered him critically ill for several days.
On Tuesday Mr. Lane and his physicians and family came to the conclusion that he could not live, and the end came quickly. He had typhoid fever.
Mr. Lane up to a few years ago was a large farmer in Massilon township, but for the past two or three years he had been in no regular business, and his health seemed badly impaired. A month or so since he was awarded the janitorship of the M.E. church, and he was engaged at this work when he took sick and was relieved one day last week by J.T. Allen.
He leaves a faithful and devoted wife, an aged and loving mother, and three adopted sons. Mr. Lane's life was insured in different companies for $6,600, all of which was paid up and in good shape at the time of his death.
