John L. Cates, son of L.E. and Mary Cates, was born October 12, 1876, near Johnsonville, Illinois; died December 23, 1925, aged 49 years, 2 months and eleven days.

On March 31, 1901, he was uinited in marriage to Wilda Anderson, to this union four children were born; two sons Estrage and Elmo and two daughters, Florine and Ruby.

In the year 1904, he was converted and united with the General Baptist Church at Rock Branch, where he was a trua and active member until death.

His life was spent in the neighborhood of his birth, where ha has a host of relatives and friends who mourn his sudden departure.

He was loyal to the best interests of his community, a good neighbor and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his companion, four children, two brothers, Ira and Lewis Cates, four sisters, Nora Guyot, of near Fairfield, Eva Haught, Mary Neff, and Edith Williams, as well many other relatives and friends, who have suffered a distinct loss.

Funeral services were conducted at the family residence at 10 o’clock on Christmas morning, by Rev. R.C. Bucher, a former pastor of the Rock Branch church. Interment was in the Cisne cemetery.
