Death of Another Old Citizen

Mrs. Betsy Creighton, after a lingering and painful illness, died Thursday of last week at the family homestead in Jasper.

Funeral services were held at Ebenezer church, Saturday last at 10:30 a.m., conducted by Rev. J. G. Dee, of this city, who furnishes the following sketch of the earthly pilgrimage of the deceased:

Betsy Creighton was born in Wayne county, Ill., Sept. 23, 1828.  She was the daughter of Rev. James Crews, a well and favorably known local preacher in the Methodist Episcopal church.  At the early age of eleven years she was converted and united with old Ebenezer church in the neighborhood where she was reared, and with the exception of about seven years, continued a member of the same society to the day of her death.

She was married to Donnell J. Creighton March 4, 1849, who preceded her to the better world some 28 or 29 years ago.  To them were born three children, two of whom still survive her, Thomas H., with whom she made her home, and Mrs. Olive Funkhouser.

She passed peacefully away Feb. 21, 1901, aged 71 years, 4 months and 28 days, after a very painful sickness of nearly 13 weeks.  Death came not unexpected to her; and for a month or more she realized that she could not get well, and longed to be away to see her loved ones gone before, and be at rest in heaven.

Her life of 60 years as a Christian and member of the Methodist church in the community where she spent all her life speaks with greater eloquence than mortal tongue can speak.  Her sufferings and warfare are ended.  She has fallen asleep in Jesus, and if faithful to her God all may meet her where sickness and sorrow are feared and felt no more.
