SKETCH OF MR. JONES

Funeral services for John R. Jones were held Wednesday afternoon of last week at the Haefele-Dixon chapel in Fairfield with Rev. Fred Lappin in charge.  Burial was in the Maple Hill cemetery.

Mr. Jones died at the hospital in Olney on Monday morning, January 4th, from gunshot wounds received at his home near Mt. Erie.  Reporting on the inquest held there, the Olney Advocate last week stated,  "A jury was called by Coroner Ralph King Tuesday, at which time a verdict was reached that the aged man came to his death from a gunshot wound, received either January 1 or 2, probably with suicidal intent.   Testimony revealed that Jones and one son were sleeping downstairs in the home near Mt. Erie, but the son was not awakened by the shot.  A daughter sleeping upstairs, later heard a noise on the floor and found her father critically injured upon investigating.

Members of Mr. Jones' family, however, say they feel definitely that the death was not suicide because he had been in good spirits and had given them no reason to believe that he would attempt to take his life.

Life Sketch.

John Robert Jones, son of John G. and Sarah McHarg Jones, was born in Erie, Pennsylvania January 30th, 1855.  When a small boy he moved with his parents to Mt. Erie and settled on a farm.  There he grew to manhood.

Erie where they spent the rest of their life.

He was converted many years ago,  and united with the Pleasant Hill Baptist church to which he remained a faithful member.  He was always found in his place at church and Sunday School as long as he was able to attend.  He departed this life at the Jackson hospital in Olney on January 4, 1943, aged 87 years, eleven months and four days.

Jones and George Jones, of Fairfield; one sister, Mrs. Earl Craig, of Flora; five grandchildren, Kenneth, Neal, and Dorothy Jean Jones, Mrs. Glen Fitch and Mrs. Lawrence Callaway and two great-grandchildren.
