JAMES ALPHEUS CARSON

James Alpheus, son of William and Margaret Carson, was born in Vinton county, Ohio, September 6, 1852.  He was one of a family of five children, three of whom have preceded him in death.  There were also eight half-brothers and sisters, all of whom have preceded him.

At the age of thirteen he came with his parents to Wayne county and resided in and near Cisne until 1891, when he moved to Fort Branch, Indiana, where he has resided since that time.

He was a jeweler by trade and for nearly a half century, operated his own shop in Fort Branch.

He was a faithful member of the Masonic, Odd Fellows, Eastern Star and other lodges and served these orders in various capacities.  He was a quiet unassuming gentleman and was loved and respected by a large circle of friends and associates.

For several months he has been in failing health and on January 11, he came to Cisne, where he was cared for in the home of his sister and her husband, Mr. and Mr. A.K. Branson.  The frailties of his age and his physical ailments were too much for medical skill and tender care, realizing that his days were few here, he expressed himself as being ready for the great Change in these words, “I have made my peace with God.  I do not fear the future.”

The end came peacefully at three o’clock Wednesday afternoon, February 13, 1935 at the age of 82 years, five months and seven days.

He is survived by his aged sister and her husband and a great number of other relatives, brethren and friends, who will mourn his passing.

Funeral services were conducted from the Cisne M.E. church Friday morning by Rev. Ralph B. Colton of Fort Branch, Indiana, assisted by the local pastor, Rev. W.E. Lamp.  Interment was in the Cisne cemetery.  The funeral was attended by members of the Pocahontas, Odd Fellows and Masonic lodges of Fort Branch, Indiana.  The Masonic ritual was rendered at the graveside by Brother Charles Epperson, Worship Master of Fort Branch lodge.  Many beautiful flowers bore silent tribute to the esteem in which the deceased brother was held by his friends and associates.
