Millard H. (Doc) Fortney, 73, a; lifelong resident of Arcola, died at 1:40 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 1996, at Covenant Medical Center in Urbana.
He was the father of Joseph C. Fortney, of Arcola, who lived in Fairfield in the 1980s.
Mr. Fortney was formerly employed with REA, CIPS, National Petro Chemical Corp.; and Jarman and Mercy hospitals. For the past several years he was a self-employed electrician and professional landscaper.
A memorial service was held Wednesday morning at the Arcola Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Don Winch officiating. Burial was in the Arcola cemetery. The Shrader Funeral Home in Arcola was in charge of arrangements.
He was born Nov. 4, 1922, in Arcola the son of Dr. Millard H. and Vivian Rennels Fortney.
On June 5, 1946, he was married to Patricia (Pat) Darnes.
Mr. Fortney was a former Arcola alderman, a member of the Arcola Presbyterian Church (a former deacon there), a member of the Arcola Masonic Lodge No. 366 AF & AM; and in 1939 was Golden Gloves Lightweight champion in California. He raced racing pigeons and was a rabbit breeder. He was a World War II veteran.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Joseph C. Fortney, of Arcola; a daughter, Mrs. Jeri White, of Las Vegas, Nev.; three brothers, James P. Fortney, of Marietta, Ga.; Robert W. Fortney, of State College, Pa.; and Joseph H. Fortney, of Tuscola; a sister, Virginia L. Fortney, of State College, Pa.; and three grandchildren. His parents and one son preceded him in death.
