Mrs. Merle Ann Hickman, 40, an Olney school teacher. formerly of Enfield, the daughter of Mrs. Ruby Lewis, of Enfield, died Thursday evening. Oct. 13 1983, from strangulation.

According to the Olney police Department, Mrs. Hickman's ex-husband, Douglas L. Hickman, of Olney, is being held by the police on a charge of homicide.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hickman were conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Enfield U.M. Church, with Rev. Dean Blackburn and Rev. Richard VanGeesen officiating. Burial was in Enfield Cemetery. Elledge Funeral Home at Enfield handled the funeral, arrangements.

Mrs. Hickman was born in Enfield Apr. 27, 1943, the daughter of Merle and Ruby (Foley) Porter. She was a graduate of Eastern Illinois University at Charleston, Illinois.

Surviving are her mother and step-father, Bill and Ruby Lewis, of Enfield; one daughter, Stacey Malone, of Olney; one son, Ronnie L. Brown, of Springerton; one sister, Kay Vore, of Roxana; two brothers, William Lewis II, of Enfield; Brian Lewis of Marion; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. R. B. Porter, of Carmi.

She was preceded in death by her father.
