A retired farmer, Elby Smith, 88, of rural Wayne City, died at 5:18 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, 1985, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Boothby Funeral Home, Cherokee, Iowa, with burial in that city.

Local visitation was held Wednesday at Richardson Funeral Home in Wayne City.

Mr. Smith was born at Cherokee, Iowa, Nov. 4, 1896, the son of Thomas and Ella Hill Smith. He and his family moved to Wayne County in 1933.

Mr. Smith was married to Celie Ruth Storey July of 1923. She preceded him in death Aug. 13, 1971.

He was a former member of the Wayne County Farm Bureau.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Delmar (Gayle) Trotter and Mrs. Rita Ballard, both of Fairfield; and Mrs Joy Ervin, of Pekin; two sons, Wayne Smith of  Wayne City; and Lawrence Smith, of Pekin; 22 grandchildren; and several great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Dale.
