Loren R. Burton, 73, of Geff, retired farmer and breeder/racer of horses, died Thursday, Dec. 1, at 3:08 p.m., at Fairfield Memorial Hospital. He had been in ill health for the past five years, and died from the complications of age, including a heart problem.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday (today), Dec. 5, at Hosselton's, with Burton's nephew, Rev. Clifton Burton and Rev. Neal Kenley presiding. Burial was at Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Geff.
Mr. Burton was born Nov. 24, 1915, in Wayne County, to John D. and Elsie (Harman) Burton. He wed Vi Schrock who survives, on Feb. 6, 1950, in Terre Haute,
He was in the automobile business in Akron, OH, for several years before moving to Geff to farm, which he did for about three years before turning to the breeding and racing of standard bred horses.
Burton stood the stallion Tar Heel Boy for seven years on his farm northeast of Geff, as well as the horses Samantha Purdue, Honest Tar, and Scotty Tar, the latter now owned by Jerry Friend. Burton raced his horses at several tracks including the Audubon Raceway in Henderson, KY, the Wayne County Fairgrounds and tracks in St. Louis.
He belonged to the Pleasant Grove Church, Geff, and the Masonic Lodge in Akron, OH.
Survivors include his wife, Vi, and one brother, Quentin Burton of Ft. Picrce, Fla. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
