Jan 10 1924
Lewis Tucker, son of William and Harriet Tucker, was born An Athens County, Ohio, March 7, 1851, and departed this life December 30, 1923, aged 73 years 9 months and 23 days.
In 1866 he removed with his parents from Ohio to Wayne County, Illinois and the family consisting of father, mother, four sons and three daughters, settled on the farm where the subject of this sketch lived and died. He was the fourth child in the family, one son and two daughters older.
In the early seventies an epidemic of Typhoid fever took the mother, two brothers and one sister. In a few weeks the father died with dropsy leaving two sons and two daughters, one of the daughters had married and returned to Ohio. The other daughter married George Singleterry and lived in Wayne County. In 1881, she died leaving the two boys, Elias and Lewis, living In Arrington Prairie, Wayne County, Illinois, and and Mrs. Adaline Koker, of Athens County, Ohio, the only surviving members of the family. Elias, the father of the writer of this sketch departed this life January 24, 1920.
The deceased, Lewis Tucker, was married to Martha E. Dickey, Feb., 19, 1874, and they have lived happily together for nearly 50 years. No children ever came to bless this union but they raised in part a number of orphan children. Elder J. T. Hale, Eld. Thomas Dickey and Ballard Fenton all found a good home for years.
He was successful in a financial way and has been a great blessing to many, always lending a helping hand. He was charitable and kind to all. He was a great man as a Christian. He was converted when 14 or 15 years of age and joined the Methodist church and remained in that society for some 35 years, but on October 22, 1903, he united with the New Zion Baptist Church and was baptised by the writer, on that same day in the Skillet Fork River. It was on Monday morning and we had just held a great meeting and had organized the church on the 18th only 4 days before. A few months later he was ordained a deacon in the church and became a real leader in his church, end a real deacon. He was one of the best deacons we have ever seen. He remained a member of New Zion Baptist Church for nearly 18 years and then removed to Arrington Prairie Baptist Church July 1921 where he remained a faithful memberr to the end.
A few weeks before his death, being in poor health. delivered a great message to those about him. Hi died in the triumphs of a living faith, and had gone to his reward .
He leaves to mourn his departure a dear, loving, faithful wife. to whom
he was greatly devoted to him.
