Herbert N. Holmes, Jr., 77, of Union Springs, Ala., formerly of Springfield, Ill., died Saturday morning Mar. 23, 1996, at his residence.
He was a friend of Dr. Paul Burkitt here and a nationally known
dog trainer.
Mr. Holmes and one of his champion bird dogs had visited Dr. Burkitt
here in years past to go hunting.
Mr. Holmes owned the Holmes Serum Company from 1945 to 1977 when he retired. In 1965 he established Gunsmoke Kennels, known worldwide for its champion pointer bird dogs. The Kennels were moved to Alabama in 1980. He and his first championship bird dog were inducted into the Field Trial Hall of Fame.
He was a native of Norfolk, Va. His wife, the former Betty J. Green, died in 1990. He was a World War II veteran of the Army. A daughter and three sons are among the survivors.
Funeral rites were held Mar. 27 in Union Springs, Ala. The remains were cremated, with interment at Gunsmoke Plantation.
