A former Fairfield Mules football great who scored over 100 points in that 1957 championship season has died in Memphis, Tenn. Gary Curry, 54, died Tuesday, Oct. 11, 1994, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in that city, from complications due to a ruptured appendix.
Mr. Curry resided at the Kings Daughters and Sons residence for the handicapped in Memphis. He was the son of Mrs. Clara Curry, of Memphis and the late Lowell Curry. The Currys resided here many years where Lowell was an executive with Airtex until moving to Memphis.
Gary was a star halfback of that 1957 Mules football team, a unanimous
NEC All-Conference selection and leading scorer. Gary was named to an All-Southern
Illinois Team by the Chicago American that year and
got special mention from the Chicago Daily News All-State selection,
as well as the Champaign News-Gazette. He was co-winner with Team Quarterback
Gene Blackburn of the Elks most valuable player award. Gary was seriously
injured in an auto accident near Fairfield as a young man and had resultant
health
problems thru the years.
Memorial services were conducted Wednesday in Memphis, with burial there.
He was born in the Fairfield area July 22, 1940, son of Lowell and Clara McDuffee Curry. He was preceded in death by his father.
Memorials may be made to the Kings Daughters and Sons, 1467 E. McLemore, Memphis, Tenn.
Surviving are his mother, Clara, of Memphis; one daughter, Kim, of Memphis; a brother, Jim, of Memphis; and a sister, Julie Craig, also of Memphis. Survivors in the Fairfield area are cousins, Janice Reed, Doris Simpson and Leroy McDuffee; and his aunts, Ida McDuffee and Maude McDuffee.
