Arthur W. Shewmake, Sr., 74, of Woodlawn, died at 11:25 p.m. Sunday, July
28, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.  He had been in failing health for some time.  Mr. Shewmake, a native of Wayne county, was a retired trucking operator.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Hughey Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with Rev. Gene Auxier and Rev. Denny Steed officiating.  Interment was in Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens cemetery.

He was born in Wayne county Jan. 17, 1911, the son of John H. and Diadema
Eliza Gay Shewmake.   On Aug. 17, 1924, he was married to Alice M. Miller.  Mr. Shewmake was a member of the Woodlawn Baptist church, the Jefferson Masonic Lodge No. 368, AF and AM of Opdyke, and Teamsters Local No. 50.

Surviving are his widow. Alice; two sons, Arthur W., Jr., of Woodlawn; and Parkes Shewmake, of Bakersfield,  Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Mary) Allen, of Mattoon; Mrs. Bobby (Jacqueline) Johnson, of Woodlawn; and Mrs. Bill (Charlotte) Moore, of Woodlawn; 16 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Shewmake was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
