Verne Mitchell, 82, a retired farmer and Wayne City resident, died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday (today), Sept. 30, 1982, at Good Samaritan Hospital at Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Richardson Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Gammon and Bro. Lute Clark officiating. Burial will be in Thomason Cemetery at Wayne City.  Visitation will be held after 6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Mitchell was born in Wayne County Oct. 9, 1899, the son of J. W. and Clara (Hand) Mitchell.  He was married to the former, Hettie Barringer Jan. 20, 1923, and she survives.

Survivors include two sons, Frank Mitchell, of Percy; and Fred Mitchell, of Steeleville; two daughters, Mrs. Eva Hawkins, of Mt. Vernon: and Mrs. Lester (Celia) Hayes, of Decatur; two sisters, Mrs. Chloe Popejoy of Kewanee; Mrs. Flora Smith of Dahlgren; 12 grandchildren; one step-grandchild; 29 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.
