One of the Pioneer Ladies of this City - Respected by all

The funeral of Mrs. Emily Monroe Cissna, who died Monday, Dec. 28, 1908, took place at two o'clock on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 31 at her late home, the funeral being in charge of Rev. Theodore Cates, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church. The funeral service was brief but impressive and took place in the prescence of the immediate family and neighbors and others who had known and love the departed neighbor and friend for many years.

The following sketch of the deceased was prepared for the funeral:
Emily Monroe was born near Glasco, Kentucky Jan. 30, 1833 and departed this life in Fairfield, Ill. December 28, 1908, aged 75 years, 10 months and 28 days. She moved with her parents to this, Wayne County, when four years of age and has since lived in this county, except for a short residence in Lawrenceville, Ill.

She was united in marriage to Jacob Baker, December, 1848. This union was blessed with two children, Emma, who died at the age of 6, and for whom she has ever had a tender longing and but recently in speaking of those of whom she must desire to see on the other side, mother first and then dear little Emma, who left her years ago and the other daughter, Mrs. C. T. Johnson, who survives her. When the call for troops was made in 1861 Mr. Baker was the first to respond and after serving within one month of his enlistment, when her hopes and expectations were joyful for his return, she received the sad news of his death and interment at Vicksburgh, Mississippi, August 7, 1864. Mrs. Baker was again united in marriage to John W. Cissna, December 6, 1868. To this union were born three children, Mrs. Orion C. Flgle, of this city, John A. Cissna, of Ardmore, Okla, and Mrs. Joseph H. Handley, of this city. She was bereaved of Mr. Cissna, May 19, 1896.

Sister Cissna was the daughter of a pioneer M. E. minister and was raised under such influences that at a very early age she gave her heart to God and united with the M. E. church, of which she remained a life long member. Having the deep convictions that a christians work was to bring others to the light of God's love she was a zealous worker in the church and was always ready in her kind and beneficent way to help others about her. You have lost a kind and loving, mothr, the curch a devoted member. She passe to her reward.

She is survived by four children, three daughters and one son, one sister and two brothers and many other relatives and a host of friends.
