Charles Porter Dies In Evansville

Charles W. Porter, 78, a native of Wayne County and an Evansville resident,died at 11:22 a.m. Monday at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.      Mr. Porter had been in declining health for two years and had been hospitalized following his third stroke. He was a patient in the hospital for two weeks prior to his death.

Funeral services were conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday (today) at Oak Valley Church near Geff, with Bro. Clifford Hicks officiating.  Burial was in Oak Valley Cemetery. J@hnson's Funeral Home of Fairfield was in charge of the arrangements.

He was born in Lamard township Jan. 29, 1903, the son of John W. and Roxie Jelly Porter. He went to school in Wayne County.      Mr. Porter farmed 40 acres east of Fairfield until his retirement in 1962. He moved to Evansville shortly after he retired.      He was a member of the General Baptist Church of Evansville and the Eagles Lodge of Fairfield.

Survivors include two sons, Carl and Charles Porter, both of Shelbyville; one daughter, Maxine Stern, of Decatur; two sisters, Blanche Sellers, of Chillicothe, and Velma Galiher, of Grandview; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
