Cletis Hosselton, 88, of Clay City, died at Richland Care and Rehab in Olney on December 15, 2004 at 2:30 p.m. Funeral arrangements take place on Sunday, December 19, 2004 at 1:30 p.m. at the Summers-Kistler Funeral Home in Clay City. The burial will take place at Zif Cemetery in Wayne County with Brother Harvard Dasch officiating. Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 18 from 5-8 p.m. at Summers-Kistler Funeral Home.
Memorials can be made to The American Heart Association, Zif Baptist Church, or the Zif Cemetary Fund.
Cletis Hosselton was born on July 2, 1916 in Zif Township in Wayne County,. His parents were Earnest R. and Elizabeth Ellen (Garrison) Hosselton. He was married to Wilma Fern Pierce on November 9, 1938 in Henderson, KY. He was actively engaged in farming and raising cattle. During his early farming years, he purchased the first one row corn picker in the area in 1943. He attended the Zif Baptist Church. Leon Cletis Hosselton was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. In 1930 his father built a country store (E.R. Hosselton Store) next to their home and Cletis hauled lumber to frame the store building with a team of horses and wagon. In the spring of 1932, the country store expanded with Cletis driving on a regular route throughout the area with a Model Thuckster wagon that consisted of groceries, feed, fabric, and everyday needs. He later used a Model A truck, and in 1935 he had a new Chevrolet truck for the huckster until 1938 when the huckster ended and he started hauling livestock to East St. Louis to stockyards and returned hauling fertilizer, feed, and coal for the country store. He was elected Zif Township Road Commissioner and during his eight year term he bulit and provided gravel roads for every house in Zif Township. He was director of the Wayne County Soil Conservation Service and was selected Conservation Farmer of the year in 1967. He was elected a member of the school board of the Clay City High School for 18 years (1952-1970) and also elected a school board member for three years of the Clay City Unit School District and served on the Advisory Council at Olney Central College. Cletis developed city lots in 1956 on seven acres in Clay City, developing the first Hosselton Addition and in 1969. he developed a four acre tract of adjoining land and subdivided for a second Hosselton Addition. He did carpenter work and bulit two houses on the first subdivision and helped build several other house including the home of his sister, a brother and his two sons. Cletis was elected and served as a bank director of the Clay City Banking Co. for 25 years (1968-1993) and he enjoyed an supported the delivery of apples and calendars to various churches and businesses for the bank. He enjoyed driving the bulldozer, road grader, truck, and farm tractor and helped his sons during the planting and harvesting seasons. He also enjoyed the winter in Florida with his wife for 20 years. He will be sadly missed by his relatives and friends. Cletis was the oldest member of the family of three brothers, Carroll, Clyde, and Curt and a sister Carrie Ann all still living in the area. He is survived by his wife Wilma Hosselton of Clay City; his son Claren Hosselton and wife Mary of Clay City; son Larry Hosselton and wife Kay of Clay City; brother Carroll Hosselton and wife Ramona of Louisville; Brother Clyde Hosselton and wife Sandra of Clay City; Brother, Curt Hosselton and wife, Donna, of Clay City; sister, Carrie Ann Gill, of Clay City; four grandchildren, Teri Herman and husband Kim of Olney; Susan Chapman and husband Kevin of Evansville, IN; Gary Hosselton and wife Kristi of Clay City; Lee Hosselton of Clay City; 2 step-grandchildren, Sherry Lence and husbabnd Greg of Anna and Richard Peterson of Carbondale; 3 great grandchildren, Matthew and Allison Herman of Olney; and Megan Chapman of Evansville, IN; 5 step great grandchildren, Kane Newton and wife Beth of LeRoy; K.C. Newton of Anna, IL; Skyler , Dustin and Dexter Peterson of West Palm Beach, FL; 3 step great great grandchildren, Aaron, Madalyn and Jessica of LeRoy. He is preceeded in death by his mother Ellen Hosselton, his father Earnest "Earnie" Hosselton, one brother Marion Glen, one sister-in-law Wanda Hosselton and one brother-in-law Rex Gill
