Cyclone Swept St. Louis and East St. Louis in the Path of a
Dreadful Tornado
The Loss of Life and Property is Simply without Parallel
One Fatality in Wayne County
There are no evidences of a cyclone in Wayne county, but in many places
the wind was strong enough to blow down trees, fences and frail buildings.
The frame house of James Sanders, Jr., of Barnhill township, was blown
down, and Mr. Sanders' mother was instantly killed. His sister, Miss Maggie
Sanders, sustained a bad scalp wound, but is now recovering.
Mrs. Sanders, who lost her life in the storm, was born October
12, 1828, her maiden name being Mary Ann Butler.
She was married to James Sanders July 29th, 1844. The results
of this union were 13 children - 4 sons and 9 daughters. Three of the children
have preceded her to the better land, ten still survive to mourn the loss
of a kind and affectionate mother. Deceased was aged 67 years, 7 months
and 9 days. She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church at Pleasant
Grove for 40 years. The funeral was preached by Rev. Gwaltney at Pleasant
Grove, Thursday evening, a large number of sympathizing neighbors and friends
being in attendance.
