COMBS  FUNERAL  RECORDS

WAYNE CITY, IL

1936 - 1954

Source:  Combs Funeral Home Records
9 volumes, about 98 records per book

Frank Combs owned and operated the Combs Funeral Home in Wayne City.  From his records, the first funeral was Martha Alice Barr.  She died on January 2, 1936 and she was buried January 3, 1936.   The last funeral performed under Combs Funeral Home was Orville Lawrence Groves on October 6, 1953.  Then the funeral home was sold to Mr. Richardson and became the Richardson Funeral Home.

The records are written in a book about 5"x7" in the sequence of the burial date.  Each page on the left contains genealogy data (displayed here) and on the right was other data related to the funeral as, costs, clergyman, doctor, and parents.  Only the parents information (when given) is included here.  The cost and payments were thought of as personal and not presented.  In 9 books, there were about 831 funerals performed in the 18 years at the Combs Funeral Home, 825 are displayed here.

Some of the records were impossible to read and many were 'just hard to read'.  We did the best to our ability to transcribe these records.  Many of the fields were not always completed, the age of the person was miscalculated, names and places were spelled different but, we "wrote it as it was written".

Sometimes there were no dates given.  Because these records were written in the order of burial, the date of burial will be displayed as (Month Year).  From there it is up to the researcher to find the complete date.

When a name, date, and place could not be completely transcribed, the missing letter(s) is displayed with a dash (-).  If you are able to fill a dash, please contact me with that information and I will add it.

The 'Resident is most likely' the place of death (often the same as found in an obituary).

Last, there are a few records where the date(s) or age do not match what is found on a tombstone but is displayed here as written in the book.

Thank you Bob Jones for your help to transcribe/verify the data for Pin Oak and Hopewell residents.

Many thanks to the owner of the books for the opportunity to display the records here.  Also, Sue and I finally got to meet in person and spent a few days together working on these records (and eat our taco pizza! Ha!).  So thanks Sue for your help and all the laughs we had!

Smiles!

Dianna
