Family cleans historic cemetery

Before there was a Wayne City one could take the Maulding Mill – Shawneetown Road to Maulding Mill on the south bluff of Shoe Creek. (near the current water plant). Near the place where Shoe Creek joined Skillet Fork, Ennis Maulding and his son-in-law George Mayberry had a water-powered mill. It was both a grist and a sawmill. The first post office in the area was Mauldings Mill est. in Feb 1837, 34 years before Wayne City had a post office in 1871. Ennis Maulding was a state Senator representing Clay, Hamilton and Jefferson Counties 1830-1834 before he settled in Wayne County.  At this time the capital was Vandalia, not Springfield.  Maulding’s last year happened to be Abraham Lincolns first year to be an IL senator.  An article by A.G. Scudamore states there was an old wooden bridge covered with shingles across the Skillet Fork River called the Maulding Bridge, named for Ennis Maulding
The Mayberry Maulding cemetery and those early pioneers have all but been forgotten. There resting place had grown up with brush and stones lay down and broken. This past summer grandchildren 7th generation found the cemetery and cleaned it. Only 3 broken stones are legible of 10 stones that can be found in a cemetery that had over 20 graves.  The Stone for Polly Hendershott was repaired, and the stone of her father, George Mayberry was replaced.  George was the great-great-grandfather of the late Rev. H.H. Mayberry.   Much work could still be done including a marker for the cemetery. Descendants of George Mayberry are eligible for DAR membership.
The family wishes to thank John Hosselton, Red Smith, and Glen Weaver for their assistance.

Thank you for your consideration
