The government grain bins here are declared surplus and are sold at public auction . . .      Bill Hartwell, 34, who engineered the Rt. 15 highway project through Fairfield, is killed in a wreck near Louisville . . . Thurston Roberts, husband of the former Bertha Johnson, dies in Florida . . . Miss Marilyn Brake, of Albion, is crowned as "Miss Wayne-White Coop" . . . FaiIfield oil men are hopeful that pipeline companies will restore a crude oil price cut of $3 a barrel . . . Ann Greathouse, of Johnsonville, wins the talent competition at the Wayne-White Coop meeting . .  . Mrs. Lillie Hendrick, of Mt. Erie, dies . . .      Cisne High is expected to open with an enrollment of 218, up six from last year Supt. Bill Frye announces. The Cisne grade enrollment for the new year is put at 160.
     Independent wins the Babe Ruth League tournament title.
     Charles Webber resigns as pastor of the Wayne City Christian Church. He expects to go to a new church at Keakuk, Iowa.
     A blight hits the Wayne County corn crop and there are fears that it may cut the yield by 25 percent or more.
     The city says that gas extensions outside the city are doomed for the next two or three years.
     Fairfield temperatures range from 69 to 91.
     Ronnie Cox and Tamara Wilson are named the best Tom and Becky at the Fairfield park fishing derby.
     The Wayne County Association for Retarded Children announces plans for the second annual arts and crafts festival.
     Chairman Tom Land announces plans for another Fairfield Rotary travelog series.
     Fairfield High School has 630 students registered for the new school year, holding steady to one year ago.
     Marriage licenses: Charles Wesley Reynolds and Pauline Barnes.
     The Fairfleld park district is waiting on a state letter to roll with the long delayed Pond Creek lake project.
     The Wayne County Soil & Water Conservation district is sponsoring a conservation bus trip to the Pond Creek area.
     Bill Pottorff gets a hole in one at the No. 2 hole at the Fairfield Country
    Harold Ivan Wood, 73, dies at Way-Fair Restorium.

     The biggest ever Cisne Reunion is underway.
     Howey Furniture advertises sleeper sofas from $169 to $449.
     An enrollment of 110 to 115 is expected at the Mt. Erie school.
     Merriam school's opening enrollment is estimated at 140
     Colvin's Red & White advertises pork steak at 59 cents a pound.
     The Wayne City Grade School will open with an enrollment af 260.
     The first work on I-64 in Wayne County appears near, with bids for a grading proiect south of Wayne City.
     A "Now Theatre" group presents a program at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
     A big 5,000kw turbine is out at the light plant and workers hope to have it back on line this week. Its loss has produced power problems here.
     Coach Larry Tickner announces plans for the first Mules football practice.  First game is set for Sept. 18.
     The Cisne fire department wins an eight team water fight at the Cisne Reunion.
     Toll free phone service is coming in part of the county as General Telephone announces a project to make that service possible.
     Gregory Etheridge, 9, Rt. 4, Fairfield is injured when struck by a car.
     Judge C. Deneen Matthews is hospitalized here.
     Grant Smith, president of the First National Bank of Wayne City, is hospitalized at Mt. Vernon.
     Mr. and Mrs. F. S. Spanel move to Fairfield from Prentice, Wis. He is with a geological topographic map project.
     Mrs. A. B. Clark, 52, of Wayne City, dies at a Mt. Vernon hospital.
     Mrs. Gil Wallace wins the ladies golf title here.

     The Press publishes a picture of the Man On The Moon NASA exhibit to be brought here, for the Fall Fun Fest celebration in September.
     Tickets go on sale for the 23rd annual Fairfield Rotary Club travelog film series. Jerry Schauf is chairman.
     Mid-American Petroleum Company purchases the Wagner Drilling Company property at the west edge of Fairfield.
     Marriage licenses: Russell Hilliard and Dorothy June McClure, Dale Lee Youngblood and Nancy Joann Levine.
     Fairfield temperatures range from 56 to 79.
     The Press publishes the program for the annual Briar Patch music festival near Fairfield.
     Mrs. Imo McGill will not have to undergo heart surgery at an Evansville hospital.
     Pam Clayton will head the Little Prince and Princess pageant for the Fairfield Fall Fun Fest.
     George Farris. 86, longtime Fairfield resident, dies at his home.
     Bernice C. Howe, 68, dies at his Rinard home.
     Donald V. Henson.  58, retired Fairfield city worker, dies.
     Wesley Price, Fairfield oil worker, is burned in an oilfield accident near Fairfield.
     Choir Director Ted Hartley calls for start of practice sessions for the Community Choir, which will perform at the Fall Fun Fest.
     A well-known Fairfield couple, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dollerhide, are observing their golden wedding anniversary.
     The Fairfield Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a breakfast this fall for area businessmen.
     Lisa Meritt wins the Fairfield women's golf title.

     Charles Brach is installed as new Cisne American Legion commander. Dewayne Mattox is senior vice commander and Gerald Hostettler is junior vice.
     The Wayne City Wig Wam Teen Center will hold its grand opening in August.
     The Atlas powder construction is underway at Wayne City.
     Four Japanese boys who have been visiting in the Fairfield area this summer are made honorary citizens of Fairfield.
     Twelve girls seek the Geff Little Miss Frontier Days queen title.
     Mayor Russell Wilson reports Hucks will build a new convenience store at First and Main.
     A survey by the Press shows many residents are opposed to the county spending $700,000 for a new jail.
     Miss Elaine Bosley is building a new home in Kincaid Acres subdivision.

     Fairfield High School will conduct an open house Oct. 20 to allow residents to view their facilities.
     Six men are mentioned as possible candidates to oppose U. S. Rep. Terry Bruce's bid for re-election.
     Harry N. Irwin, former superintendent of schools in Wayne County, dies at age 80.
