JAMES CLARK

State of Illinois-White County
On Sept. 4, 1832 James Clark aged 77 years, a resident of Wayne County, appeared in Circuit Court to apply for  pension.

Stated he entered service Militia about the first of  Aug. 1776. Started out around Seneca Town on Seneca River. While serving was in squirmish with Indians. Of the men he was with 33 were killed or wounded and 250 Indians killed. He was wounded in right thigh.   They returned to Princes Fort last of Sept. or first of Oct., remaining until Mar-Apr of 1777.  He immediately re-enlisted for 4 months. Was in Seneca Fort area when it was built. He was detailed as a spy. Returned to Princes Fort and discharged Sept. or Oct.

In Oct. 1777 James enlisted again and volunteered for 3 months.  Again he was detailed as a spy, he returned to Princes Fort and was discharged July 1778.  During July 1780, he  again volunteered  service for 3 monts. They marched about 200 miles. Returned to Charlotte, North Carolina and Princes Fort area, and ranged area till June 1781.   Finally in Aug. 1780, he volunteered about 1 month.
 

Stated he was born Rowan County, North Carolina on April 18, 1755, lived and called to service from Ninety-Sixth District and  lived in that area untill Aug. 1801.  Then he moved to Kentucky until 1818, then he moved to Wayne County, Illinois. Has been a resident since that time.

Stated until July, 1778 he enlisted in State service, and after that was a volunteer. Never received written discharge.

States his neighbors, William Simpson and L.B. Elledge can testify to his character and Revolutionary War service.

At different times he was a Private, Lieutenant and Captain.

Inscribed on Roll of Illinois he was to receive $80.00 per , to commence on Mar. 4, 1834.
He died on Aug. 25,1834
