Pittsburgh Tenn March 27 1862

Inventory of the effects of George W. Hearl, late a private of Capt S. Hoopers Company D, 40th Reg Ill Vols. who died at Neshoby Hardin County, Tenn on the 15th Day of March 1862. Was born in Breckinridge County Ky was enlisted at Scottsville Wayne County, Ills on the 10th Day of Oct 1861; by Capt S. Hooper to serve for the period of 3 yrs. (Was five feet-eleven in high, Fair com, Gray eyes Dark hair was 33 yrs of age, and by occupation when enlisted a Farmer.  Was last paid by paymaster Mgt Shennan to include the 31 day of December 1861. has pay due him from that time to the period of his death. So entitled to all other allowances authorised to volunteer Soldiers.  He has received clothing amount $30.74 cts. The proceeds of his effects were placed in the hands of the cons-commander to be forwarded to his wife; as the con ... were on march; immediate sales had to be made.  S Hooper, ... Co.



Officer's Certificate to Disability of Soldier
Stephenson, Alabama   December 19 1862

I, E. J. George do hereby certify that I am 2nd Lieut of Company [?] of the 40th Regiment of Ill Infty Volunteers, and was acquainted with George Harl who was a member of my company. That the said George Harl was mustered into service on or about the ... day of August 1861 and died about the 15 day of March 1862 having become disabled from doing duty as a soldier from on or about the ... day of ... 1862 while in the service of the United States and in the line of his duty as a soldier, in the manner and at the place as follows:

Priv George Harl of my company was taken sick while in the line of his duty as a soldier attending outpost guard at Savannah Tenn on March 15th 1861. Priv Harl died on March 15th 1861 on board the Steamer City of Altoma near Shiloh Landing, was sound when enlisted --- died of Lung Fever.

That the said soldier was in good health at the time he entered the service and the disability above referred to affected him while in the service and at his discharge, as follows: ... was the cause of his death. The surgeon Wm Graham 1st Ast of 40th Ills Inft determined the cause of Priv Hearls death to be Lung Fever.

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt from your Office of application for Pension No. 8517 and to return it herewith, with such information as is furnished by the files of this office. It appears from the Muster Rolls on file in this office, that George Hearl was enrolled at Scottsville, Octr 10th 1861 in Co. D., 40th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers, (3 years) and mustered into service as a Private at Paducah, Octr 27 1861 in Co. "D" 40th Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. On the Special Muster Roll of Co. "D" of that Regiment dated August 18th 1862, he is reported as: Died of sickness on Tenn River, March 15th 1862.

Henry Chapman being ? duly sworn appears and says that he was a private in Co ? 40 Regt Ill Vol Infy --- that George Harl was a member of the same Company and Regiment that he and said George Harl were both sick at the same time and was on a hospital boat at Pittsburg Landing Tenn and that he was present when said George Harl died and said boat at said place, which was about the 15 of March 1862.  He further states that he knew that Nancy J. Harl is his widow and was married.  He further states that he has no interest in her application for pension for service of her said husband.

Rolls show that decedent was mustered into service in said company as a Private Oct 27 / 61 and "Died of Sickness on Tenn. River March 15 1863. Surgeon General reports him as having died at the same time at Regt. Hospt. Of Meningitis.  Certificate of 2nd Lieutenant of said company shows that he died at the same time -- that he was taken sick while in line of duty on outpost guard March 10/61 -- Died March 15/61 [insert ^] - These last two dates are evidently clerical errors - on board of Steamer City of Altoma -- was sound when enlisted --- died of Lung Fever --- that the Surgeon of the Regiment pronounced that to be the disease.

Admitted September 6, 1864, to a Pension of $8 per month, commencing March 15, 1862.  Enos Clarke, St. Louis Mo.

Subscribed and sworn to before me and I further certify that affiants are credible persons to whom the contents were fully explained before signing and further have no interest in the claim of Nancy J. Hearl.

Personally appeared before me the undersigned authority in and for said county Nancy J. Harl whom I certify to be entitled to full faith and credit and who upon her oath says that she is the widow of George Harl late a private Co. "D" 40th Reg Ills Vols that by said deceased soldier she is the mother of Seven children the two youngest of which are named and the dates of whose birth are as follows.  Joseph E. Born November 24th 1858 and Charles F. Born February 16th 1861.  That said names and dates of birth are at this time correctly given and that the dates of birth of same children as given in this affiants original application for pension as occurring on the 18th March 1858 and 18th February 1860 are incorrect and the error must have been committed by the person filling out the application as this affiant knows of no other way the mistake could have been made.
