"I was acquainted with NATHAN MARTIN for twelve or fourteen years prior to his death he being a resident of the Village during that time and I being his family physician. But I do not remember of ever treating himself or other members of the family frequently. The aforesaid NATHAN MARTIN was dissipated-i.e.- he was fond of intoxicating liquors and spent a great deal of his daily earnings for the same and wasted a great deal of this time in saloons. His family at the same time being dependent upon his daily labor for a living of maintenance."

MARGARET A. MARTIN

I have known MARGARET A. MARTIN for 20 years ... in the fall of 1867 the said NATHAN MARTIN and MARGARET ANN MARTIN moved from Mt. Erie, Wayne Co, ILLS to Clay City, at that time he owned some personal property. He had at that time one old horse worth about $20.00 and some household goods worth about $50.00 and no other property, and that he at the same time traded for a lot with a log cabin on it.  Th house and the lot was worth about $50.00 and no other property real or personal that his wife the claimant owned no property real or personal that they live in this property until he died in 1881. The said NATHAN MARTIN worked around for any one that he could get work from by the job or days' work at chopping wood and other work and thazt he would earn from 50-75 cents per day and from his earnings he spent the most of it at the saloon for liquor. He spent a great deal of his time and the most of his earnings on hard drink. That his wife MARGARET A. MARTIN was at times almost destitute of food and clothing.  She lived (?illegible) her husband took some provision home and they used it together from 1867 to 1881. She was dependent principally upon her own labor and earnings for her support and upon her neighbors.  And when he died he had no property except the lot and the log cabin and about $28.00 worth of household goods since his death she has been totally disabled and dependent upon her daughter MALINDA CREWS at Fairfield for her maintenance who is a widow woman with 4 or 5 children to support.  All of these statements are made from personal knowledge close neighbor oi the family each month and year since 1867, to his death in 1881 and since except since 1884 at which time she went to her daughters' at Fairfield, ILLS.
