WAYNE  CO., IL

CIVIL  WAR  FIRST and LAST  THAT  DIED

Source:  Wayne County V.F.W., Fairfield

According to some paper works, the V.F.W. was given the following information from the State of Illinois Defense Department.

The first soldier from Wayne Co., IL  killed in the Civil War was MARTIN  BAKER.  He got wounded at Shiloh on 6 Apr and died 8 May, 1862, at the Jefferson Barrocks, MO.  Martin was 23 yrs 3 mos 8ds old and is buried at the Buckeye Cemetery.

After this page was uploaded to this site, I received 2 more emails from researchers with information of their man that was the first to die.

Please go back, click the links and read those submissions, on Elias Martin Holmes and Samuel Hooper.  Thank you Neva and Verdaine for sharing this with us!

The V.F.W. has the last man that served in the Civil War died in 1942.  Whith some digging, I found:
Wayne County's oldest and last Civil War Veteran was William D. WHITE (a native served Co. D and E, 87 ILL. Inf.)  when he died September 21, 1942.

Late 2011,
Shela sent me a file of the Civil War Vets Living in Illinois, 1943.  Please go back, click and read that file.  Thank you Sheila!
