Charles Thomas Sampson

and his wife Bessie Rosella (Overall)

Charles was born 24 July 1873 in Wayne Co., IL and died 8 Nov 1931 in Lincoln, Logan Co., IL of Chronic Myocarditis, which is the hardening of muscular walls of the heart.  He was the son of Victor N. SAMPSON and Josephine IDDINGS; and grandson to Francis Freeland SAMPSON and Matilda BAXTER of Petersburg, Menard Co., IL; and William IDDINGS and Mary Jane MITCHELL.    His siblings were: Eoline Grace; William 1841; Orestes S., 1842; Tench Tilghman, 1844, Mary Martha P., 1849; Victor Neff , 1851; William P. 1870; and Carrie M. 1879.

In 1899 he married Bessie Rosella OVERALL, daughter of Posey OVERALL and Isabelle SIMMS; Wayne Co., IL; granddaughter of William SIMMS and Mary SIMMS of Wayne Co., IL.  Bessie was born 17 August 1883 in Wayne County, Arrington Township, IL and died 9 November 1959 in Lincoln, Logan Co., IL.   Charles and Bessie rest in Old Union Cemetery, Lincoln, Logan Co., IL.

Joseph A. KINGSLEY originally purchased the plots where Charles and Bessie rest, for himself and his wife Mittie.  Joseph moved his family back to Laconia, Harrison Co., IN, where they remained and were buried there.  Joseph gave the two plots to his son Walter KINGSLEY who married Charles and Bessie's daughter, Hazel.   Charles was originally buried in Sec B, Range 14, Grave 10.  He was moved on July 1, 1972 to Sec D, Block 39, Lot 3 next to Bessie, his wife.

Charles and Bessie were active members of the Salvation Army in their early years and later became members of the Church of God. 

Charles also worked as a “Chicken Picker” at a local Produce Company in Lincoln, IL.
 

Charles and Bessie had the following children:

4) Hazel (SAMPSON) KINGSLEY 1906-2002.
    Married Walter J. KINGSLEY.
5) Pearl Marie (SAMPSON) KINGSLEY 1907-1996.
   Married Frank W. KINGSLEY.
6) Raymond SAMPSON 1909-1980
7) Albert W. SAMPSON 1917-1917
8) Margaret SAMPSON 1921-2002
9) Alice SAMPSON 1925-Present

When Charles and Bessie were first married they lived with Charles’s widowed mother, Josephine Iddings SAMPSON and a single brother, William SAMPSON, in Fairfield, Wayne Co., IL. On the 1900 IL Census, Grover Twp, Fairfield City, Wayne Co., IL: Charles is shown living with his mother, Josephine SAMPSON, Feb 1840, 60, widowed. Living with her are: William, Oct 1871, 28, son/single; Charles, July 1875, 24, son/married; Bessie, 1883,16, dau-n-law; and Roy, Feb 1900, 4 mo, grandson.

Sometime between 1907 and 1910, Charles and Bessie moved the family to Lincoln, Logan Co.,

On the 1910 IL Census, Logan Co., IL: Charles, 35; Bessie, 25, wife; Roy, 10, son; Jesse, 8, son; Elmer, 6, son; Hazel, 4, daughter; Pearl, 2, daughter.

On the 1920 IL Census, West Lincoln Twp, Logan Co., IL: Charles, 46, Chicken Picker, Produce Co., as his profession/trade; Bessie, 36, wife; Roy, 20, son; Jesse, 17, son; Elmer, 16, son; Hazel, 13, daughter; Pearl, 12, daughter; and Raymond, 9, son.

Also on the 1920 IL Census, West Lincoln Twp, Logan County, IL, the KINGSLEY family lived in the neighborhood.   KINGSLEY was misspelled “Kingles” on this census.  Hazel and Pearl SAMPSON married Walter and Frank KINGSLEY.  The KINGSLEY household is as follows: Joseph Kingsley, 47; Living with him are: Mittie, wife, 38; Nellie L., daughter, 20; Charley, son, 18; Walter, son, 17; Frank, son, 15, Dolly, daughter, 9; Elsie, daughter, 7; Sidney, son, 5; Dorothy, daughter, and 3; Neva, daughter, 1.
