James Vandaveer, born Oct. 31, 1802, Christian Co., KY, died Mar. 16, 1890, in Flora, Clay Co., IL at the home of his son Thompson, of a heart attack.

He was first married to Esther Price, who died in 1848. Their children were Thompson, Mary Ann Frazier, and Charles H.; and three who are now deceased, James L., Ira W., and Sarah Jane Neighbors. He married Nancy Crews, who preceded him in death three years ago. Their children, Albert, John W., Mathew Edwin, and George W.

James came to Wayne Co., IL from Indiana between 1833 and 1837, settling in Mt. Erie Twp., Wayne Co., IL.

James Vandaveer, Mt. Erie's  oldest citizen, died at the home of his son,  Thompson, at Flora, on Sunday.

Interment at Locust Grove cemetery on Tuesday.

He was about 90 years old and was one of Wayne's pioneers, having settled in Mt. Erie township in the early days and bought several 100 acres of land from the government at 1.25 per acre.

John Vandaveer, of Springfield, and Rev. Albert Vandaveer, of Willow Hill were in Mt. Erie last Tuesday, attending the funeral of their father, James Vandaveer of Flora, Illinois.  He was 87  years of age.   The remains were interred in the Locust Grove cemetery, near his home in this township.
