Funeral services for Ananias Zerkel, of Cisne, were held Wednesday afternoon of last week in the Cisne Methodist church by the pastor, Rev. W.J. Leslie. Burial was in the Cisne cemetery.

Mr. Zerkel was a well-known and respected Cisne resident. He passed away at his home there Monday night, April 24th. Several years ago Mr. Zerkel retired from his farm work and moved from the Blue Point neighborhood to Cisne, where he has since made his home. Mr. Zerkel's obituary sketch was prepared and read at the funeral by his nephew, Claude A. Galloway of Noble.

Ananias Zerkel, son of a sturdy German family, Noah and Martha (Foltzs) Zerkel, was born on a farm in Ohio, July 16, 1850. When a boy of 14 years he came with his parents to Illinois. On December 26, 1876 he was married to Elisabeth Pixley, of Clay county, and to them were born two children, Della, who married Wesley Spires and died in California in 1932 at the age of 54 and Charles, who died October 25, 1918, aged 37. When the children were 9 and 12 the mother was taken away.

Two years later he again united in marriage to Fannie Yockey, of Wayne county, March 21, 1892. To this union no children were born. But as time went on they took into their home a little girl, Mable Wilfong and to her they were father and mother. Today this little girl is Mrs. Reuben Barth, of Cisne.

He was aged 83 years, nine months and eight days. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Cisne.

There is left to mourn his departure, four grandchildren, Harold Zerkel, of Cisne, Illinois, and Helen Zerkel, Charles Spires and Mrs. Mildred Russell, all of California; four great-grandchildren, one brother, Zack Zerkel, and one sister, Mrs. Emma Lutz, both of Clay county.
