Fatal Accident Johnsonville, Jan. 25th, 1869

This morning our usually quiet village was startled by the painful announcement that Mr. George W. Weaver, of this vicinity, had accidentally shot himself. It seems that he had been cleaning his rifle, and not being aware that it was loaded, had placed his foot on the hammer, and while blowing into the muzzle to clear the tube, his foot slipped, discharging the contents of the gun into his mouth, killing him instantly.

Mr. Weaver was an estimable young man, highly respected, and leaves a large circle of friends to mourn his untimely departure. He was a soldier, having served three years and six months in Co. I. 48th Reg. Ills. Vol. Infantry, and by his bravery, energy, noble and generous bearing won the love and esteem of his comrades and the confidence of his officers. His remains will be interred with the honors of war by his former associates in arms.

This entire community extend their heartfelt sympathy to his aged parents, and to his relatives, in their bereavement and afflictions.
