                                       Ferne Matthews,  65, Dies

Mrs. Wanda Ferne Matthews, 65, a resident of Way-Fair Restorium, formerly of rural Wayne City, died at 6:38 a.m. Sunday at Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Matthews died unexpectedly several hours after she was admitted to the hospital.  She had been in declining health and suffered from diabetes and Parkinson's disease, the family told the Press.

Services Tuesday

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Johnson's Funeral Home in Fairfield with Elder Russell Blackford officiating.  Burial will be in the Dickeyville Cemetery north of Sims.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday (tonight) at the funeral home.

Mrs. Matthews was born in Berry township in Wayne County Jan 13, 1917, the daughter of Charles and Cora (Pike) Walker.  She attended New Harmony school in Wayne County.

She was married to Ordie Matthews, Oct 1, 1960, and he preceded her in death.

Mrs. Matthews was a housewife.  She and her husband lived near Bailey Church outside of Wayne City.  The couple both entered Hickory Hill Nursing Home in Mt. Vernon ten years ago and Mr. Matthews died while a resident there. Mrs Matthews transferred to Way-Fair about eight years ago so
that she could be nearer her family.

She was a member of the R.L.D.S. Church of Fairfield.

Mrs Matthews had been the January resident of the month at Way-Fair Restorium and an article about her had appeared in the press.

The survivors

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Earl (Monzell) Withrow of Wayne City; five sisters, Mrs. Glen (Edna) Legg, Mrs. James (Louise) Legg, Mrs Clarence (Gladys) Windland, all of Fairfield; Mrs. Bill (Frances) White, of Cisne; and Mrs. Bill (Hesper) Folger, of New Carlyle, Ind; one brother,  Charles Theron Walker, of Fairfield; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, and her parents.
